Dental Implant Aftercare and Long-Term Maintenance

Implants cannot decay, but the tissues around them can become inflamed. A practical guide to caring for them.

A dental implant is a significant investment in your oral health. While implants cannot develop decay like natural teeth, the gum and bone around them can become inflamed and infected. Careful aftercare in the first weeks and consistent maintenance over the years both play a major role in keeping implants healthy.

The first few days after surgery

Your dentist will give you specific instructions for your situation. General advice often includes:

  • Bleeding: slight oozing is common for the first day. Bite gently on clean gauze if advised.
  • Swelling: cold packs applied to the outside of the face for short periods may help in the first 24–48 hours.
  • Diet: choose soft, lukewarm foods and avoid chewing directly on the implant site.
  • Rinsing: avoid vigorous rinsing on the first day. Gentle saltwater rinses may be recommended afterwards.
  • Smoking and alcohol: avoid both, as they can interfere with healing.
  • Medication: take any prescribed or recommended medication as directed.

Contact the clinic if bleeding is heavy, swelling increases after a few days, or you develop a fever.

During the healing period

The bone needs time to integrate with the implant. Keep the area clean as instructed, attend follow-up appointments and avoid putting excessive pressure on the site. If you have a temporary tooth or denture, follow guidance on how to wear and clean it.

Daily care once your tooth is fitted

Treat your implant restoration with the same care as natural teeth — or more.

Brushing

Brush twice daily with a soft brush, paying close attention to where the crown meets the gum.

Cleaning between

Use interdental brushes, floss designed for implants or a water flosser as recommended by your dentist. Plaque that collects around the implant can cause inflammation.

Implant-retained dentures

If you have a removable denture that clips onto implants, take it out daily to clean both the denture and the attachments. Learn more on our implant-retained denture page.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Bleeding or swelling around the implant
  • Tenderness when chewing
  • A loose crown or denture
  • Bad taste or discharge
  • Gum appearing to recede around the implant

These can be signs of peri-implant disease or a mechanical problem. Early attention gives the best chance of managing it.

Protecting your implant

  • Avoid chewing very hard items such as ice or bones
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth and your dentist recommends one
  • Do not smoke — it is associated with a higher risk of complications
  • Manage general health conditions such as diabetes with your doctor

Professional reviews

Regular check-ups allow your dentist to examine the gums around the implant, check the restoration and bite, and take X-rays when needed to monitor bone levels. Professional cleaning removes deposits that are hard to reach at home.

Long-term expectations

Many implants function well for many years with good care, but no lifespan can be guaranteed. Crowns, attachments and other components may need maintenance or replacement over time, just like other dental restorations.
