Braces vs Clear Aligners: Understanding the Differences

Both can straighten teeth. The right choice depends on your teeth, your habits and how you prefer to live during treatment.

Person placing a clear plastic aligner onto their upper teeth

If you are thinking about straightening your teeth, you have probably come across two main options: traditional braces and clear aligners. Both can be effective, but they work differently and suit different situations and lifestyles. Here is a balanced comparison to help you prepare for a conversation with your dentist.

How braces work

Braces consist of small brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by a wire. The wire applies continuous, controlled pressure, and it is adjusted at regular appointments to guide teeth into new positions. Because they are fixed, braces work around the clock.

How clear aligners work

Clear aligners are a series of removable, transparent trays custom-made from scans of your teeth. Each tray is slightly different, moving teeth a little at a time. You switch to the next set after a period advised by your dentist. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help aligners grip.

Side-by-side comparison

Appearance

Aligners are much less noticeable in everyday conversation. Metal braces are visible, although some people embrace this, and less-visible bracket options may be available.

Comfort

Both can cause pressure or soreness, especially when starting or changing stages. Braces may rub the inside of the cheeks at first; aligners have no wires but can feel tight for a day or two with each new tray.

Eating

With braces, you need to avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods that can damage brackets. With aligners, you remove the trays to eat, so there are fewer food restrictions — but you must brush before putting them back in.

Cleaning

Aligners can be removed, making brushing and flossing straightforward. Braces require extra time and tools to clean around brackets and under wires.

Commitment

This is often the deciding factor. Aligners only work when worn — usually around 20–22 hours a day. If they spend too long in their case, treatment can fall behind. Braces cannot be removed, so they do not rely on daily discipline in the same way.

Suitability

Aligners can manage many cases of crowding and spacing. Some complex bite problems and tooth movements may be better handled with braces. Only an assessment can determine which approach is suitable for you.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Will I reliably wear aligners for most of the day?
  • How important is a discreet appearance during treatment?
  • Am I comfortable avoiding certain foods with braces?
  • Do I play contact sports or wind instruments?

The role of planning

Both options start with a thorough assessment, often including digital scanning and X-rays. With aligners, a digital plan shows the intended stages of movement. With braces, your dentist will explain the expected sequence of adjustments.

Retainers are essential either way

Teeth naturally tend to drift back towards their original positions. Whichever option you choose, retainers are needed afterwards, and following retainer instructions is a key part of maintaining your results.

Making the decision

There is no universal winner. The best choice is the one that suits your teeth and that you can commit to comfortably. If you would like to explore your options, book an orthodontic consultation at Dental Planet.
